Charla explores the immediacy of touch, the conditions of place and the effects of weather using the earth as her source. In 1997, Charla produced small clay sculptures and in 2003 recreated them as pedestal sized wood sculptures and auctioned them off at the Wilmer Jennings Gallery to support Art Education in New York City. Charla Puryear has exhibited both her paintings and her sculptures in many group and solo exhibitions, including the National Academy of Design in New York City, the Fassbender Gallery in Chicago, a solo show at the Central Park Arsenal Gallery and the June Kelly Gallery in New York City among others. In 2004 Charla won the Pollock-Krasner Grant and most recently in 2005, she was selected by Danny Simmons to speak at the Brooklyn Museum of Art on the topic on "Diversity in the Arts".
